Electric Gypsyland 2 kicks off with folk meddlers Tunng’s reinterpretation of Taraf de Haidouks ‘Homecoming’ proving they can turn their hand to remixes with as much panache as everything else they touch.

From a distinctly folky start, Buscemi picks up the pace with a carnivalesque take on Kocani Orkestar’s ‘Alone At My Wedding’. The premise of Electric Gypsyland is to take tracks from Balkan Gyspy bands and hand them over for reworking by a range of electronic and fusion artists including Animal Collective, Cibelle, ShrineSyncroSystem and Gaetano Fabri.

The four artists held up for remix are a mixture of the established — Taraf de Haidouk and Kocani Orchestar — to the relatively unknown Mahala Rai Banda and Zelqer — and the remixes are on the whole imaginative and varied enough to make this a real treasure trove.

Although retaining something generally Balkan about the tunes and beats, the remixers take their tracks in vastly differing directions, from Smadj’s dirty beat version of ‘Mi Bori San Korani’ to Shantel’s superbly imaginative and jazzy take on ‘Duba Duba Si Hora’ with its sped-up accordians and walking bass (definitely the track of the album). There’s also a great offering from Oi Va Vai and Nouvelle Vague’s smooth late evening ‘Morceau D’Amour’.

Well worth a spin and DJ food for the adventurous.
