Acoustic Ladyland / John Peel Day - Poole, Dorset |

Last year, it went more Tong than Peel at Mr. Kyps as the Noisettes had to cancel as their lead singer went all rock n’ roll and broke her collarbone stage diving the week before. Not expecting such antics tonight from professionals from the land of the Skinny Grin. The current Acoustic Landyland tour introduces us to new member Ruth Goller on bass and their live album, the limited edition and exclusive to the tour and download, A.L.IVE (now there’s a clever title) that was recorded live in July at Komedia in Brighton and the Speakeasy in London. But before the main band, Brighton’s The Hat, as featured on the compilation Folk Off, showed us why they’re such a real one-off. Can you imagine Earl Zinger getting poetic with a hybrid band of The Cinematic Orchestra and the Chevalier Brothers? I know it’s a tough one and given it’s hard work to make an impression on such a night, they impressively got a good response from the crowd. Likewise, Dorset’s youngster collective Sancho (previously known as Sancho Panza before threats of litigation by a DJ forced the abbreviation). Adding a combination of violin, laptop, sax and occasional accordion to drums, bass, guitar and keyboards gives them an electronica-folky type look that would appeal to Sunday Best’s da Bank, while the majority of their material seems light-hearted Talking Heads meats Pulp and early Roxy Music. ‘How Hot Is Your Blood’ sounded good and they are definitely the type of band Peel would approve of. Getting back to Acoustic Ladyland, Tom Herbert may have gone but this line-up is anything but done. Favourites like ‘Iggy’ and ‘Road Of Bones’ still have the energy of The Ramones dancing on Albert Ayler’s heritage. New tracks like ‘Promises, Promises’ and ‘Death By Platitude’ (played for the first time in public) take on the Soil & “Pimp ” Sessions in a UK style. Nu-rave-punk-jazz-avant-garde really suits the sound of Tom’s Nord Electro keyboard, Goller and Rochford seem to have an immediate understanding and Wareham just didn’t stop moving all night. Paul Artrocker on Resonance FM on Monday was banging on about the appeal of 60s Garage bands as they gave their all when they went into the recording studio with the one-shot of immortality and he compared that total commitment to the sound of Acoustic Landyland’s ‘Piggy’. And you can’t argue with that sentiment. Leader, vocalist and saxophonist Pete, recommended the crowd to the mash up of ‘Cuts & Lies’ with Kanye West’s Daft Punk tribute that he’d found on You Tube the previous night (as below) which is a good effort but I’d stick to the original myself. This ‘John Peel Day’ gig was put on in association with Curiosity (who host their own monthly gig at Mr. Kyps promoting new music who will be putting on The Mules and Eugene Guinness next week) and a new radio station for the south coast, Original 106fm. Also need to mention the excellent book that’s come out last week, The Peel Sessions by Ken Garner. Sub-titled “A story of teenage dreams and one man’s love of new music” it’s the one for the geeky fans with extensive details of all the sessions that Peel played on all his shows at Radio 1. Don’t forget to check out my latest N-E-X-T-W-O-R-L-D show (hosted at podomatic.com) and next year it’ll be more overly geek-peel; I promise. So we kept it Peel tonight as we have continued throughout the year. JP RIP. For Peel Links: |
