Elektrons - 'The Get Up EP' |

Releasing records under the name Elektron, Justin and Luke are apparently causing quite a buzz in clubs around the country. It can only be for the same reasons that people rush to see movies with their favourite actors in them, even when they know that the film is likely to be crap. ‘Get Up’ sees a beat that most acts would have probably rejected for being too formulaic, thrown together with random horn and vocal samples, all of which are straight out of the popular book The Dummy’s Guide To 90s Big Beat. In the meantime, the normally excellent rapper Soup (of Jurassic 5) provides a rap which couldn’t have been any more phoned-in even if it had been possible to hear the ring tone prior to it starting. The CD version of ‘Get Up’ includes a Radio Edit, Album Version, Instrumental Version and the ‘Herve Gets Down Remix’; all of which go to show that there’s a lot of truth in the cliché that you can’t polish a turd. The only other new track on the single, ‘Joy’, actually hints at undiscovered depths, blending as it does soulful vocals and a laid-back piano house melody. But ‘Get Up’, being the A-Side, is obviously the track that Elektrons are most pleased with. I can’t help but think that if it weren’t for the fact that they had made it, Justin and Luke would never play a track this average at the excellent Electric Chair. |
