Fatima - Mindtravelin' EP

Fatima’s debut release has been eagerly anticipated after previous appearances with Shafiq Husayns, Floating Points TettoryBad and Funkineven’; the new EP shows how far she’s travelled already!

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

It was her appearance on the mighty ‘Kleer’ (see review HERE) by the mighty FunkinEven, that raised expectations for the debut solo release, which is the 4 tracker, Mindtravelin’.

On the a-side, the set starts with the broken soul-jazz skat-wanderings of ‘Higher’ in a sub-Wonder/Badu funk dub-style produced by VeeBeeO. That’d be excellent in normal circumstances, but when it’s followed by a track with the added West Coast funk of Stone Throw’s Dâm-Funk, its going to be hard to beat; especially and they get on the cosmic trip. If you can, try and imagine a female James Pants (in a good way): WOOOW!

It was certainly a big tune and this weeks’ Freesoul session as hosted by Futuristica Music’s Simon S as assisted by Brownwood’s Martin Gordon as they spin the usual hot tunes and soon to be released tracks that hit the spot (apart from some exclusives I can’t tell you about). Not only that, there was Simon’s tribute to GURU (RIP) that was spot on.

I’d have loved to have dropped Eglo Records’ FunkinEven’s ‘She’s Acid’ (right on it after Tudor Acid’s remix release, see HERE) or either of his two productions for Fatima. ‘On the Go’ will have to wait until next time but if you’re into summer fun, ‘On The Go’ is the obvious hit; typical of Freesoul mid-week goodness; expect jazz from the foot of Mount Bellonzi at the Saturday’s Jazz Chronicle session (see details below).

And then there’s ‘Soul Glo’ that takes up where Sa-Ra Creative Partners left off.

Anyway, in EGLO’s short history, they’ve not done a bad one yet (as you’d expect from a label formed by Rinse’s Alexander Nut and a certain Sam Shepherd) so if you’ve not started yet, I think you should.
