Filthy Dukes - Nonsense In The Dark

OK, so I got this just because it wa recorded on the mixing desk of producer and Krautrock legend Conny Plank (the very desk that Kraftwerk used to make those albums back in the day), but is Nonsense In The Dark analogue electro-indie-kraut-pop nonsense?

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Even if the Filthy Dukes got the their hip mate Samuel Dust (the singer with Late Of The Pier) to do the buisness on the single, ‘This Rhythm’, they’ve certainly not scared to get even more guests involved on the album.

This tactic is not always a good thing and you possible mixed results here, a bit like a Kill Em All club night? The influences of the likes of Daft Punk, Kraftwerk, Chemical Brothers, Tangerine Dream et al. It seems to go a bit wobbly whendo the overtly synth pop-80s thing like ‘Elevator’ being the most obvious and the Duran Durany ‘Messages’ with Tommy “Swedish hotshot” Sparks (his name seems to be poppin up everywhere at the moment).

Orlando Weeks (of The Maccabees) guests on the title track (this one is a bit of a grower), Brandon Curtis (Secret Machines) lends his talents ‘Don’t Fall Softly’ and the hilarious frYars’ Ferry/Bowie impersonation that’s ‘Poison The Ivy’.

The electroesque ‘Absolute Body Control’ (more Human League than Can) is more our thing along with ‘Tupac Robot Club Rock’ (featuring Plastic Little) that was released as a single last year and it got radio play on Kiss, Galaxy, Xfm, NME and Ministry FM and Radio 1 with Sara Cox making it ‘Single Of The Week’.

OK, a S. Cox recommendation might get you a bit worried but whatever you think of Nonsense In The Dark (personally I’d go for the kraut-ness of the instrumentals ‘Cul-de-Sac’ and ‘Twenty Six Hundred’), the Filthy Dukes’ status as in-demand remixers continues apace, with commissions from White Lies and Bloc Party; and if you’ve heard their brilliant remix of Kevin Rudolph’s ‘Let It Rock’, you’ll know why.
