In case you don’t know, Finn Peters is one of the leading flute and sax players in the UK today. Not only was Gilles Peterson raving about Hear, O Israel (the new album with Herbie Hancock from 1968!), he was also getting excited about his mate Matthew (Big Band at the Big Chill 2008) Herbert’s Accidental label and the forthcoming release of Finn Peters new album. So we were a bit excited to find the follow-up to Su-Ling in the post this week.
Peterson played a couple of his tracks on his show the other week (the one with the Karen P ..Broadcasting mix, more of her coming HERE soon). ‘Octet’ may not have stood out on his show on the radio at nearly 4am, but turn it up; proper modern jazz where the electronica compliments the traditional quintet. Like a subtle jazz version of Tunng, it goes you goose bumps.
Peters has sensibly used the same musicians on this album as Finn’s debut album Su-Ling as that made the top 10 albums the year in Jazzwise. This time Nick Ramm, Tom Herbert, Tom Skinner, David Okumu are joined by Matthew Yee-King on various electronic bits and presumably it is he who provides the nightingale sounds on ‘The Nightingale’. This is one of the tracks of the year for me so far. Anyone that heard Rory McGarth reading his book Bearded Tit on Radio 4 last week will know there’s more to twitching than just bird but who the nightingale’s song is blended into this jazz track is stunning (what is it with “too clever” Arsenal fans; cite Rory McGrath, Nick Hornby and Peterson?).
One of the pleasures of this album is that we know Finn’s flute and saxophone will be stunning as ever since Club Brazil but he’s also kept that Su-Ling gamelan meets modal oriental a la Yusef Lateef. Staying in the outdoors ‘Mayday’ and the title track are both beautiful pieces; we’re told ‘Butterflies’ is based on traditional Balinese Butterfly and Bird Dance. Also add ‘Atlas’ that’s probably the most gamelan.
No idea what a ‘Pterodactyl’ is as goes from a Mahavishnu Orchestra/Lol Coxhill style guitar/sax battle on a base of Ramm’s piano to gentle sax in the breeze; not over the top prog or impro style, more cinematic.
And you’d think being on Herbert’s label they’d be more dance or electronic influences. No doubt that’ll be left for a remix album but Butterflies is defintely another top 10 album like Su-Ling It would be great to see him at Big Chill Festival but current forthcoming gigs are as below. And check his MySpace that currently has ‘The Nightingale’ loaded; just sounds better on every listen.
