Five Corners Quintet feat. Mark Murphy - 'Nicola Conte/Povo' Remixes

Mark Murphy and the Five Corners Quintet shine and get some remix action going.

Five Corners Quintet feat. Mark Murphy - 'Nicola Conte/Povo' Remixes

As big fans of Five Corners Quintet album Chasin’ The Jazz Gone By, Nicola Conte and Povo (We Are Povo) and with all this talk of ‘Sunday Afternoon At Dingwalls’ (the Launch Party gig and the album), it’s great to be reminded how good Mark ‘Dingwalls’ Murphy is.

Nicola Conte does his thing with a re-recording of the backing track at his Bari Studio with ‘Friends and Relatives’. It starts with some serious double bass and Murphy going on about pouring “blue milk into her ear”. Is this the 60s? No, ‘Jamming’ is a poem by Everett Hoagland and it’s about dancing all night long. After that it’s into the samba shuffle with some fabulous Fabrizio Bosso trumpet and Pietro Lussu on the piano. It’s new Blue Note on vinyl without the scratches.

‘This Could Be The Start Of Something’ (big/great/good) is the standard and Povo lead with the piano of Heine Hansen with some additional percussion. A good warm up track and one for older teenagers in the house, “at 21 watching your diet” — nothing changes?

I don’t want to get too deep about news vs. old, to paraphrase Chasin’ The Digwalls Gone By but all these artists have that jazz spirit; authentic but current at the same time. There’s no doubt that the ever youthful Murphy is really sounding on form. I remember seeing Mr. Murphy down at the in a South London Club back in the day and I’ve been a fan ever since; that was the start of something and this could be the start of your something. Either way, don’t miss this quality 12” release.
