Flying Lotus - 'Reset' EP

Member of the Coltrane dynasty, avant-garde beat experimentalist joins Warp Records to release his new EP that sees him pressing the reset button

Flying Lotus Reset

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Last year’s Flying Lotus debut album, 1983 caught the attention of a whole load of folks from Sun Ra lovers to underground hip hop beat heads. Being released on Plug Research didn’t hurt either as it got picked up by Peterson, Benji B, Carlos Niño, Nick Luscombe, all the folks we know and love.

Flying Lotus has previously worked with Laura Darlington (now Mrs. Daedelus Darling) and this first track, ‘Tea-Leaf Dancers’ features Andreya Triana on vocals. She was last spotted with Jose James and the Brownwood Sessions and you’ll recall this one was on Bubblers Two.

The other tracks are firmly in the spaced out beat mode that you’d be expecting by now but with the move to Warp, this will give Flying Lotus a much higher presencce and this guy is definitely one to follow; such a great shame that there isn’t a record of him working with his great aunt Alice Coltrane (RIP).

He says globe trotting has widened his influences but ‘Vegas Collie’ and ‘Spicy Sammich’ sound more dublab than dubstep to me while ‘Massage Situation’ is especially Daedelusesque. That’s not a bad thing of course and fans of Dabrye, Ammoncontact, Shape Of Broad Minds and the like will love this.

Talking of dubstep, Daedelus and all things in-between, ‘Dance Floor Stalker’ is the track for me on this EP. Bouncy, dark with that nursery rhyme of a synth line makes it irresistible.

The next album is due for release in the new year and it’s been marked down now as a potential Album of the Year already; 2008’s 1983 so to speak. “Avant garde soul music” at its best.

Hectic Mix nominations: ‘Dance Floor Stalker’, ‘Tea-Leaf Dancers’, ‘Massage Situation’, ‘Spicy Sammich’, ‘Vegas Collie’
