Before ‘Maximum Joy’ (still a big favourite in my box), the original version of ‘The Man Who Paid Before’ was on the Relish Compilation EP.

But it was only a matter of time before it got the remix treatment. It comes in two flavours, Aussie ravers Riot In Belgium (they of the monster, ‘La Musique’) and Tronik Youth (aka DJ Neil Parnell).

The thing that strikes you about the Riot In Belgium mix is how ‘Germanic’ it is. Perhaps these boys have spent too much time in the bedroom analysing their man machines but clearly there has been some computer love action going on.

Relish boss Headman got together on the Tronik Youth via remix of the Gossip’s ‘Standing In The Way Of Control’ (come on, you know you love Beth). So while Riot In Belgium may be old skool bangin’, Tronik Youth takes a Giorgio Moroder disco (trans Europe express) train all the way to outta space.

Positioned between these two is a squishy electro dub (inspired by Bethnal Green?) by Kissy Sell Out (aka Thomas Bisdee). I’m a hugh fan of those lovely liquid EFX and this ‘Tightropes’ remix comes in at a glorious seven and a half minutes.

Once more, something for everyone or even, everything for everyone. Who says they don’t make ‘em like they used to any more. Also worth checking is the free download on the Issst site promoting Franz & Shape’s live gig there last month (see links below).
