FunkinEven - Kleer

This week my specs got damaged but I really thought I was seeing things when this one turned up, could that really be Kleeer on Eglo Records?

EGLO03.JPG

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Not a chance but that doesn’t matter as Eglo (home of Floating Points) have found themselves another superstar producer in Funkineven (aka Stevie J) who is West London’s answer to Dam Funk (he of Hudson Mohawks recent album Butter), Sa Ra, Dorian Concept et al.

There’s both an instrumental and vocal version of the title track ‘Kleer’ with the bonus of Fatima on vocals, she of the Si Begg/Karen P tracks on the album …Broad Casting, the Red Bull Music Academy (I look forward to meeting her next week as she’ll be at Workshop before the Build An Ark at Cargo) and the Floating Points Ensemble; remember the session they did for Peterson a couple of months ago?

I must say though I favour the b-side with a Peech Boy-b-boy funk inspired ‘Mad Swing’ and the stuttering ping-pong (if not quasi broken) of ‘You’ (a some stage, there with be the ultimate Hectic ping-pong mix of all time available, I promise); big dance floor reaction to ‘You’ and massive support from Benji B (of BBC’s 1Xtra). It’s all totally irresistible and is that a touch of Johnny Guitar Watson?

Peech Boys is on the re-issue in Phonica at the moment with some very authentic labels on the 12” (made me look twice, ask Anthea) but the liquid dreams of ‘Kleer’ is a better purchase if you ask me; the new sound of funkin’ but we need longer versions don’t you think?

For fans of Mr. Beatnick’s The 4th Day / Fallen Apples, The Strange Dreams Of Paul White and even the Bei Bei, Georgia Anne Meldrew and Shawn Lee monster ‘Make Me Stronger’ (with Floating Point Ensemble remix), this EP is a ‘Kleer’ winner - incredible mad swingin’ soulful funkin arcade game even for this day and age that you can’t ignore!

And a big date for your London diary, this Friday (20th Nov 2009) Floating Points and FunkinEven are all set “to bring a funk laden diversity of tracks in the guise of pretty much everything covering house-grooves, broken beats, neck popping electro and soul flexing downbeats” to Download This at The Westbury (see details below).

Now, it that Kleer?
