Futuristica Music - Here and now on Samurai FM

When I heard that Simon S was launching a new label, I was very excited. This week sees the launch of the Futuristica Music show on Samurai FM and it’s one to really savour.

Futuristica Music - Here and now on Samurai FM

Of course, we loved Break Reform and the new artists on Abstract Blue Recording on the compilation such as Karmara and Low Budget Soul so what does the future hold? Well, thankfully, Kamara and Low Budget Soul are very much part of Futuristica Music plus Stark, Unforescene, The London Trio, Darren Taylor Quintet and Fly favourites Deborah Jordan and Robert Mitchell’s Panacea.

The Futuristica Mix on Samurai FM has certainly kept me excited this weekend. Simon S has put together a mix that’s pretty close to an hour-long Fly soundtrack (see tracklistings below). Ed Motta, Max Cole and the brilliant ‘Higher Skies’ with some soon-to-be-released stunners coming out on the label itself.

In at No. 4 (so to speak), is ‘Rise’ by Kamara who has teamed up with the in-demand Deborah Jordan. Fresh from her appearance on Star Charts she’s found time to put in yet another stunning performance. Sounding even more soulful than ever before. And get that bass synth and dreamy keys. Don’t let her walk out that door.

Now, just to get you broken-beat dancefloor shufflers excited there’s a funky Yam Who? remix of the ‘Rise’ backed track called ‘Namaste’. Put your space helmets on for some interplanetary downtempo beats’n’strings. It’s currently featured on the Futuristica Music homepage at the moment, future soul indeed!

Talking of soul, the Kev Brown remix of Low Budget Soul’s ‘When I Call’ makes me want to cry it’s so beautiful. It features the vocal talents of Randolph Matthews and Marcia Escoffery who have recently worked with NSM, TY and Gum Drop. Not sure about this ‘low budget’ handle as there’s nothing cheap about this (check the Roger Robinson remix!). Apparently, not long to wait for the album, Strangers To The Ordinary. Also recommend having a look at the Futuristica myspace site which has the forthcoming b-side, a Blackbeard remix of a track called ‘You Are The One’ which is comfortingly sounding like an old classic.

Last but not least, we love anything Nostalgia77 does. It’s a fact that he’s going to stamp his mark on any remix. He’s done that here on ‘Narita’ but it’s not over the top, he’s just moved the track to the jazz club upstairs. You won’t want that sax solo and drums to ever stop. Stark are Natasha Stark (vocals and lyrics) with the nu-jazz backdrop of Georgeyo. Stark are also in the process of recording an album so that’s another one we’re going to hearing lots of.

All these tracks on the first three releases have clearly found a good home and even as a mixed bag, you can hear the ‘family’ connections between them. Much like the current work at Wah Wah 45s and Further Out Recordings, new directions in soul and jazz is what Futuristica Music is destined to do. They’ve certainly made an excellent start; watch out Stones Throw! Where can I get the T-Shirt?
