General Midi - Operation Overdrive

General Midi plugs in the leads for the new album as he starts Operation Overdrive with the latest gear crashing single, ‘Four Million Ways’.

Foreign Beggars’ Orifice Vulgatron provides the vocals on ‘Four Million Ways’ and it’s rockin’ electro at its best (see full review HERE).

And if you think the album will be loads more of the same, prepare yourself for a load of collaborations; and some from the outside lane to say the least.

The next track, ‘Absinthe’ features Sean Gill (of The Passengerz) and there’s no hint of drunkenness (although a big nod to Gary Numan’s old synth collection) whilst we love the chorus line, “nobody came to my party, but I don’t mind’ (it’s a bit catchy this one).

And on the subject of leftfield, Leigh De Vries brings “her monotone vocal style and natural barotone” to ‘Back For More’ that also takes us back in time to somewhere between The Human League and Throbbing Gristle; Ms. De Vries has been known to hang out with the Satanic Sluts Extreme! And sticking with naughty girls, Dominique Woolf (ex-Devils Gun) is in the fast lane at night on ‘Misbehave’ but is it a bit too Kylie to be dirty?

New York singer-songwriter Von Doom and Jim Davies (former live guitarist for The Prodigy, axe man for UK rock band Pitchshifter and DJ Hyper sidekick) all join in of ‘Poker Face’ that again, just misses it; too 80s?

But on the subject of The Prodigy, fans of the GM standard electro breaks will not be disappointed with the bangin’ tracks ‘Audio Assault’, ‘KickBox’, ‘Out Of Control’, ‘Milton’ and ‘When I Rock’.

Apart from ‘Four Million Ways’, the best of the collabs is LA’s Whiskey Pete, aided by siren, who MCs the instructions “get it down girl, report to the dancefloor”; binge drinkers break out to this one as its a BIG tune of a happy hour BOGOF double standard.

It’s been a few years since the General Midi Midi Style album broke through and since then, he’s been DJing all over the globe and you know when you hear a tracks like ‘KickBox’ and ‘When I Rock’ that he’s been road testing these tunes live in the club and fine tuned in the studio prior to them passing the dancefloor MOT.

And when General Midi is in overdrive, there’s not many better; Faster Polyphony! Kill! Kill!
