Ghost’s debut album Seldom Seen, Often Heard came out earlier this year on Breakin’ Bread Records. It featured long time collaborators Asaviour, Verb T, Finale from Detroit and Kashmere but the track ‘Basic Instinct’ was always going to catch our ear as Abstact Rude is on the mic.

LA’s Mr. Rude has worked with all the top West Coast underground guys, like Mum’s The Word (‘Constant Evolution’), Ammoncontact (‘Worth It’), Busdriver (‘Map Your Psyche’) as well as featuring on Project Blowed’s 10th Anniversary album.

I love his laid back style and his life guide on ‘Dos and Don’ts, Wills and Won’ts, Basic Instinct to make you think’. In the background, the wind instruments and gentle guitars in the breeze are a winning combination.

As we’re on Breakin’ Bread, I’m thinking there’s only thing that could improve this track; a Natural Self remix. Wow, think Abstract’s rap to a reggae-ska-dubout track which is going to be topping my chart for a while. Brilliant stuff by Mr. Pearn and note Hectic got the single right (nearly) from his duo project, The Broken Keys as ‘The Witch’ is coming out on 12” soon. It looks like Mr. Self is the busiest bread breaker out and about up ‘till Christmas (see gigs below).

As good as Abstract Rude is, the instrumental of the original and the Ghost remix are just as fine. There’s something of Daedelus on the original and the Ghost remix is full of funky bassline breaks.

There’s a bonus track on the 12”, ‘Round Trip’ which reminds me of a dark Dr. Rubberfunk on a dreamwork cinematic journey.

Small Hectic gripe, it’s a shame we didn’t get a real dub version of the Natural Self remix but that’s just my basic instinct.
