Ghost - Freedom Of Thought EP

Celebrating 10 years of “the UK’s only soul, funk and hip-hop label”, top producer Ghost returns with some suitably mature beats for these thoughtful times.

Ghost (akaSimon Williamson) has been a prominent mvoer in the UK Hip Hop scene, even before he released his first 12” on Breakin’ Bread, Ghost Stories in 2003. Since then he’s released a variety of hip-hop, including ‘Let Em Know’, ‘The Payoff’ (that featured Kashmere, who appears on the recent The Roots Of El-B) , ‘Basic Instinct’, Seldom Seen Often Heard and the ‘different’ ‘It’s All Love’ / ‘Ying Yang’.

On this Freedom Of Thought EP, he continues to “step outside of the pigeon holes of being a UK hip hop producer” and as in the title, freedom of thought means he can do something that’s fits ‘Way You Feel’, even if that’s a gentle guitar riff over big drums. ‘Return Journey’ continues to be different as it’s piano theme and choral synth is cinematic, whilst the drums and rock guitar riff are heavy; rock guitars, it almost could be shoegazing!

For the DJ Shadow fans, ‘Feel Pain’ goes the big string route and it’s another one that with OST leanings as it develops, top track for mixtapes.

The rap is provided by Detroit’s Finale on ‘S’All Good’ that’s a bit dreamy and on the remix of ‘Elevate’, the track features Jehst and his ‘official’ DJ, IQ. Jehst has been as prolific in his 10 year career as the Breakin’ Bread label itself. Ghost took the acapella from an IQ’s album and added a new synth and piano infused backing track.

This is very promising and the new album sounds like it is a worthy follow-up to Seldom Seen Often Heard.
