Django Reinhardt Festival - Live at Birdland - Gypsy Swing!

This greatly balanced offering stores all the class, style and chipper French vibes that you would expect from Django himself, somehow producing a spectacularly detailed and accurate portrait of a phenomenal artist that created a universe of music. Fitting it snugly in a live collection, which could be a great introduction to a novice, it can also offer a new take on traditional songs to the die-hards that have lapped up the chronology back to front.

Particular standout tracks include ‘What is this Thing Called Love?’, ‘Nuages’ with its breezy-and-easy sciffle and the dashingly hip ‘Stompin’ At Decca’ that has perhaps one of the craziest and downright beat sax solos you are ever going to treat your ears to (pulled off by the exceptionally talented James Carter). In typical Django style, every instrument will get their turn to flaunt their wears in an extravagant and yet modest standoff. The overall performance leaves a clear impression on the crowd, with ecstatic cries and calls from all at the end of every tune delivered. And rightly so!

It is a typically cliché observance, but here is the spirit of Django for all to re-live and marvel at, in all its raw and live glory. With performances like these, it is easy to see why the Django festival has been such a success.

Gypsy Swing!.. should be seen as a celebration of an idol rather than a release in its own right, but with its love shining through for all to see, this should get all listeners interested in the actual festival this release is inspired by and drop all to see it firsthand
