Gotan Project - Tango 3.0 The Remix EP

As Gilles Peterson continues to celebrate 10 years at Radio 1, here’s a band that made it big at the same time the show was finding its feet; it’s the return of the Gotan Project with a remix EP

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

The Gotan Project are a trio that started in 1999 in Paris by Argentinean guitar player Eduardo Makaroff, French producer and DJ Philippe Cohen and from Switzerland Christoph H. Müller who together re-invented le tango.

Currently on the European leg of their world tour (that takes two years to complete) they released their latest LP, Tango 3.0 six months ago after their last proper album release Lunático back in 2006.

As Philippe intimated in the Peterson interview last night (see links below), it’s been hard to emulate the success of their 2001 Revancha del Tango debut album but with this remix EP, picking some of their favourite remix experts, has certainly add a bit of dancin’ spice to the three selected tracks.

And there’s another Peterson connection as the first track he played on his show some weeks ago was the Michel Cleis (who has < the most ‘subtle’ remix of ‘Rezando’ on Gilles Peterson Presents Havana Cultura: Remixed back in June) with another subtle job on Afrobeat/Tango/Dub on a train - it’s a monster in the office.

It’s been a while since I’ve done anything Man Recordings/Daniel Haaksman (in fact, it’s been over a year since Daniel Haaksman Presents Funk Mundial and as there’s a new compilation coming out soon to celebrate 5 years of Man Recordings is, there’s three remix versions of ‘Rayuela’ to remind us how good they are.

The set kicks off with another prolific duo, The Count And Sinden (an he’s another one at The Count, aka Hervé wh’s got Cheap Thrills Vol. 2 double compilation CD coming out soon) and I can see why it’s a ‘Caravan Of Courage’ as it’s a full speed gallop with ‘De Hombre A Hombre’ whilst the less than prolific Âme comes up with one of their best in the deep house zone.

This is a really impressive remix package and whilst it’s too late to catch them at the Troxy (East London’s hottest new venue) this release more than makes up for it.
