Guida de Palma & Jazzinho - Atlas

This album nicely follows on from Sundays Afternoon At Dingwalls. Quality Latin jazz soul and funk all-wrapped up in a Dingwalls feel for today. This band would definitely be a live booking if Dingwalls was still a regular session

Guida de Palma & Jazzinho - Atlas

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

It was produced by Ed Motta while Gilles was doing his crate diggin’ thing early this year around Motta’s house (how cool is that?)

Guida’s singer/songwriter style has been described as ‘idiosyncratic’ possibly as she can get equally as much Ella Fitzgerald, Chaka Khan and Joyce into a performance as McCoy Tyner, Archie Shepp and Stevie Wonder (sometimes in just one track!)

It’s been released on the appropriately entitled Freestyle Records, which is Adrian Gibson’s label and back in the spirit of Dingwalls, ‘The Lagoon Monster’, ‘Da Tempo ao Tempo’ and ‘Maria Mulata’ are cookin’ in a retro Latin jazz dancin’ style.

Fly hacks are going to love ‘Stress’ for its bit of North African flava and the “two extremes” of ‘Symmetry’. ‘Symmetry’ features a duet with Motta and sounds a little operatic/West End Stage musical. Something I’d normally run away from, but it’s that oddness, sorry idiosyncrasy, that I love.

For more obvious Rhodes groovers, I think the songs sung in Portuguese are the ones to go for, particularly ‘Aos Meninos De Angola’ (another with an strange bit in it), ‘Afro Luso Brasileiro’ and the slower tempo ‘Cancão De Emblar’.

Motta, who blew us away at Wychwood Festival and Cargo has said that he was looking to bring “a Steely Dan-ish perfectionism” to the recordings. He certainly brought some Stevie Wonder-ness, particularly on his favourite track ‘Symetrie’; a more accessible ‘Symmetry’ sung in French!

There’s news of a Nicola Conte remix on the cards on a track to be decided, let’s hope he avoids my least favourite tracks of the 12, ‘Look Inside’ and ‘Tide’ and tries something in the leftfield. I suspect he’ll play safe with ‘Da Tempo ao Tempo’ or the disco-funk of ‘Humano, Desumano’. Whichever he picks, it’s bound to be up to his usual brilliant best.

We also love the Atlasfor the cover. Worldwide as somebody might say, when’s the Maida Vale Session?

Hectic Mix nominations: ‘Humano, Desumano’, ‘Da Tempo ao Tempo’, ‘Symetrie’, (and for the brave) ‘Symmetry’.
