Back when Gilles Peterson was Worldwide with Karen P, Casey Benjamin and Nicole Guiland (aka Heavy) were making dreamy soul-jazz funk with tracks like ‘Wonderlove’ and the 2004 Worldwide Winner, ‘Unbelievable’.

First Sessions is a CD collection of their early EPs, some unreleased material and the sought after remixes by Jazzanova (as on Witness Future Vintage Vol.2), Yam Who? and Intergalactic B-Boy DJ Spinna.

This is the Heavy inspired by 70’s soul and funk rather than 2007 album Jazz Money$$ that leaned more towards the sounds of the 80s. It includes the hit single ‘Do For You’, the mission statement of ‘Music’ and the jazzy-funk ‘Sez Who Sez Me’. And it’s a good opportunity to get down with tracks that are due a second look, ‘Summer Song’ in particular is sounding fresh for some sunshine loving; also ‘Just Can’t Get’ is a bit of a grower with the original now sounding better than the remix.

As a label, Kindred Spirits are still releasing fresh new talent like Dorian Concept killer album When Planets Explode and some ‘old’, but equally original like the new Carlos Niño & Friends album High With A Little Help From.

With Peterson trumpeting a “soul revival” in his show for the past couple of weeks, as Guiland is often compared to a young Chaka Khan and Minnie Ripperton, timing is everything and Kindred Spirits might have got it spot on [again].
