Hollie Cook - Hollie Cook

It may be 30 years since Bob Marley passed away but reggae’s pop flame is still going strong and he’s Hollie Cook is a hot name for the summer.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Produced by Prince Fatty (aka Mike Pelanconi), he off Survival Of The Fattest and ‘Milk & Honey’ has really got fat with this one (that’s in a good way, not the overblown obese way).

The recent single pairing of ‘That Very Night’ and the old staple, ‘Milk & Honey’ that hit the streets recently got the attention of the Radio DJ high flyers like David Rodigan (new compilation coming out soon on BBE), Jo Whiley, Don Letts, Nemone, Lauren Laverne, Radcliffe & Maconie, Steve Lamacq, Mista Jam and Zoë “Lucky Cat” Baxter to name just a few

Being a regular in the reformed Slits line-up and the daughter of Sex Pistol’s Paul Cook isn’t going to hurt in the contacts game either. The album features some heavyweight names like Omar (who has his own album coming out soon), Dennis Bovell, George Decker (of The Pioneers), Style Scott and Horseman as Cook takes over where Lilly Allen’s promising start stopped.

Her self-coined ‘Tropical Pop’ sound stems from her passion for reggae singers Janet Kay and Phyllis Dillon combined with classic 60s girl groups and you’ll find this best on the cover of The Shangri-Las’ Walking In The Sand; Oh! No, Oh! No, Oh! No, I hear you cry but no screeching motorbike burning rubber sound efx here I’m afraid.

‘It’s So Different Here’ goes a tad dubby Balearic steel pan it’s got so much latent heat, it’s set for big radio plays and festival revelry and ‘Cry’, with a ‘Police & Thieves’ sample and DJ toast is ideal beach time boppin’; Oh! Yeah.

There’s a sort of modern take of Lovers Rock with three crackers ‘Sugar Water’, ‘Shadow Kissing’ and ‘Used To Be’ (never thought I’d hear myself type that if you know what I mean) and the album finishes with a track called ‘Body Beat’ which is like her version of a Gerry Dammers if you get my drift.

She’s just done a couple of album launch gigs in Camden last week but it won’t be long before she’s headlining somewhere near you soon - Mr. Bongo do it again, very neat.
