Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Something in the water though has changed in Finland resulting in a disappointing album. Though there are moments of interest such as Midnight In Trieste, most other tracks play to a tried and tested jazz-dance formula. The album veers towards the worst excesses of acid jazz of bland melody and innocuous rhythms and touches too close to retro stylings. The great jazz-singer Mark Murphy joins the group for two tracks, Kerouc Days In Montana and Come And Get Me, which are both OK-ish in a non-offending way. If these collaborations were released pre-Koop or Jose James, then it might offer some interest but both artists are head and shoulders away this fare. It is a real shame, as both Mark Murphy and The Five Corners Quintet on paper would be a match made in heaven, but unfortunately it seems the best ideas have been left behind. Make no mistake this is no a bad album per se, and some of the music is fun in a throwaway pop Sixties way, but The Five Corners Quintet are capable of much, more than this. |
