Hundred Strong - Gravestones

Hundred Strong are as sick as anyone about the constant youth killings that’s going on these days as the new single ‘Gravestones’ is a plea to stop the violence

Hundred Strong is Ben Dubuisson who apparently spends most of his time in his “dingy basement in Bristol” working on his productions. That doesn’t mean to say he’s some sort of beat hobbit with no social life as on his last album, Basement Blues he managed to get the vocal talents of some experts including Alison Crockett (US3 / King Britt / Wah Wah 45’s) and Victor (Hear The Sound) Davies to join him.

He also got Joseph Malik (Compost Records) and J. Todd (from the under-rated duo Def Harmonic) to guest and the pair of them are back on this new single taken from the forthcoming album Sun Rises In The West.

‘Gravestones’ is in the style of a New Orleans style heavy soul blues march that starts with the line “there’s too many brothers underground”. You’re a long time dead and it’s a good an anthem for change as I’ve heard. The bar room blues theme would make an excellent instrumental track.

In total contrast, the b-side, ‘How Good Is It’ is features a soul-jazz disco theme that could have been taken from a EWF or KC and the Sunshine Band track (in their good periods that is). You”ll recall Mr Todd from his work with Roger Robinson and he’s got a very distinctive style.

If you’re into your leftfield hip hop of a conscious soul nature, you don’t want to miss out on this one as you salivate for the new album and the live gigs.
