Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Hybrid (aka Mike Truman and Chris Healings) are much sort after remixers in their own right having remixed over 40 artists including Radiohead, 2 Bad Mice, Alanis Morissette, Carl Cox, BT, The Future Sound Of London and Moby. But hotter names are have got the call here including The Orb, Cinematic Orchestra, Serge Santiago, Jerome Sydenham and Deadman5. So who got to do ‘Finished Symphony’? The one with the Russian Federal Orchestra. Don’t be too disappointed if you were rooting for Cinematic Orchestra as there’s two big versions by Deadset and Deadmus5. Bouncey space heads will love the Deadmus5 mix and to be honest, I had a bit of trouble getting it off ‘repeat’ as it just fills you with a good feel vibe. I had a similar problem with the Deadset mix with that dripping tap synth EFX. To keep that good feeling going, ‘Last Man Standing’ is my kind of synth and New York’s Jerome Sydenham (via London and Ibadan, Nigeria!) links bangin’ beats with cinematic overtures. ‘Just For Today’ even sounds like it should be in a film and hang on for the dub version right at the end. And staying with that theme, ‘Until Tomorrow’ gets reworked by former half of Radio Slave, Serge Santiago who unsurprisingly produces a clickier version than the version that opens CD1. Generally, there’s a harder edge on CD2 that includes Hybrid’s own original mix of ‘Sleepwalking’ and their own 100 mph remix of ‘Theme From A Wide Angle’. That said, the Boy 8-Bit remix is a bit of old skool inspired fun and hands up for Elite Force’s ‘I Choose Noise’. Dig deeper and you’ll find Judie Tzuke gets in on an electro groove courtesy of Kosheen DJs! Now you’re really big names, The Orb and Mr. J. Swinscoe, could have just turned up to collect their expenses. Neither has and their respective remixes are worth the price of the album on their own. Neither aimed at the dancefloor, although watch out for Peter Hook’s bass on ‘Higher Than A Skyscraper’, ‘Blackout’ is typically atmospheric future jazz. As these tracks have been selected as the ‘Best Of’ their previous three albums and all the remixers are all on top form, this renews you’re faith in big screen progressive house and it’s offspring possibilities. Hectic Mix nominations: Higher Than A Skyscraper (Orb’s Towers Of Babel Mix), Blackout (The Cinematic Orchestra Remix), ‘Finished Symphony’ (both versions), ‘Theme From A Wide Angle’, ‘Until Tomorrow’ (Serge Santiago Remix), Just For Today (both Sydenham mixes), ‘Last Man Standing’ Reviewed: Hybrid — Re_Mixed (Distinct’ive Records) Cat.
