Iain Archer - Magnetic North

From the slow start with ‘Canal Song’, which reminded me of Tunng with the simple fingerpicked guitar and dulled bass beat, Magnetic North takes a while to get going, and I was feeling a little turned off when by the beginning of ‘Minus Ten’ the pace hadn’t upped.

And then it all kicked in, and the wait was worth it. The third track, appropriately entitled ‘When it Kicks In’ ups the tempo again, and the refrain ‘when it kicks, in you’ll know it’ seems particularly apt for this slow starter.

The loose, almost lazy electric guitar playing and production works in Iain Archer’s favour. Most of the tunes have the potential to become anthemic, but the production cuts it back to what they are, decent, poppy, guitar and lyric-driven songs.

Ex-Snow Patrol and Novello award winner Archer, continues in the same vein as his former band in approach to songwriting, and there’s the same melancholy and numb vocal style, just without any of the grandeur — which can only work in his favour.

Magnetic North is released on 18 September.
