Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Formerly of the excellent Rachel Unthank and the Winterset, who released one of last year’s finest folk albums (recognised with nominations in most categories at this year’s folk awards), fiddle singer Jackie Oates keeps her arrangements of English traditional tunes stripped down bare. The darkness of the selection of trad songs that potted her self-titled debut is still certainly still there, but it’s a whole leap ahead for the Devon based singer. Produced by Show of Hands’ Phil Beer, certainly a man who understands traditional music, Oates is accompanied on The Violet Hour by a strong supporting cast of musicians including Jim Causley, Jim Moray and Tim Van Eyken It’s not necessarily cool to keep your folk stripped down in a year so far marked by downbeat folktronica releases and it’s a refreshing uncool. The Violet Hour is released on Chudleigh Roots Dates: 22 June. Devizes Folk Festival, Wiltshire. 10 July. Storfolk Club, Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire. 11 July. Milkmaid Folk Club, Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk. |
