Jah Wobble - Get Carter

With the press full of Michael Caine this weekend, there’s no better single to look at than Jah Wobble’s latest, the cover version of ‘Get Carter’.

Whilst Sir Michael is still at it being the hard man in his latest role in the critically acclaimed Harry Brown that’s coming out this week, he did one or two good films in the past and particularly in his first 10 year ‘golden’ period including the classic Get Carter in 1971 with the soundtrack by Rod Budd.

The theme from Get Carter by British jazz pianist and film composer Budd has been much loved ever since its release and has been variously remixed and covered since, including our favourite on Afro Art, Peak’s version in 2005 (see review HERE).

Wobble is of course everyone’s favourite ex-bassist in P.I.L. and London Transport Tube driver who has spent best part of the last 30 years collaborating with a wide variety of artists including Pharoah Sanders (and check ‘Snake Charmer’ with The Edge and Can’s Holdger Czukay’ that got a fantastic Francois Kevorkian mix years after its original release) and numerous explorations in World music and loads of other genres with his group ‘Invaders of the Heart’.

The last time we saw him was on Chinese Dub last December with his renown harpist wife Zi Lan Liao release on his own 30 Hertz Records that he performed at this years’ WOMAD.

On this one, Wobble is joined by Clive Bell (Japanese shakuhachi flute) and Sylvia Hallet on Sarangi (an Indian fiddle) and viola a 10” vinyl release for the reggae label, Pressure Sounds. There’s not a great deal of reggae in the original ‘Get Carter’ whilst Wobble dubs it up in all Indian head massage with psychedelic curry house gloom of the 70’s North East. It’s kind of minimal and downtempo but I think I prefer the even dreamier dub of the ‘Cliff Brumby Mix’ (Cliff Brumby being a rather unpleasant character in the film); you can check out both on the Pressure Sounds site (see links below).

Wobble’s careering over the years in all things bass, dub and more has never been less than interesting and here’s one for your Christmas stocking list, the Wobble autobiography is called Memoirs of a Geezer: Life, Music, Mayhem and is out now on Serpent’s Tail.

Needless to say, all things Wobble and Pressure Sounds are recommended.
