When The Haar Rolls In is more distinctive than Year of the Leopard and manages to quietly grab you by the collar from the first seconds and not let go until the ‘The Capture of the Horse’ has faded into the background, in a way the last album never managed. It’s rare for a self-produced album to sound so rounded, especially when the subject matter is as introspective as Yorkston’s, but the gruff introspection is all part of Yorkston’s charm, as are the oblique lyrics which hint rather than tell and the slightly superior, distant tone he adopts. The epic title track is by far the album’s highlight and each second of its almost seven minutes are driving, gentle and brutal all at the same time. “When the haar rolls in it’s just a question of waiting things out. And that’s when I swear the music gets me through” That pretty much sums it up. This is music to get you through with its love that frays and tales of the haar. When The Haar Rolls In was released on Domino in September. Links |
