Jenna - Barefoot and Eager

The title track of Jenna Witts’ debut album is a dead giveaway for where the singer-songstress is coming from - and it’s definitely coastal. This is music for evenings on the beach, when the last boarders have left the sea and couples are walking in the dusk light.

Well okay, that’s perhaps a little optimistic if this summer has been anything to go by and you’re more likely to be cowering under a bus shelter avoiding the pouring rain listening to it on your mp3 player. If so, Barefoot and Eager may be a sort of antidote to the torrent.

It’s optimistic, light singer-songwritten stuff and while Witts’ youth shows there are some very decent tracks. Witts worked closely with Steve Knightley and Phil Beer (Show of Hands) on creating the album and it shows through in the style and production. Two of the tracks (‘You’re Mine’ and ‘Flora’) were written and arranged respectively by Knightley and both appear as musicians on the album. The first of these two, ‘You’re Mine’ is without doubt one of the album’s highlights.

The other obvious stand-outs are ‘Hangin’ Around’ which packs more of a punch than any of the other tracks and the final track ‘Surfer’s Storm’ which has a simple elegance. I imagine we will hear more from Jenna Witts.
