Jon Redfern - May Be Some Time

I had to listen to this a few times to come to a conclusion on it, but I’m glad I did as it’s a grower.

Jon Redfern - May Be Some Time

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

‘I’m Still Young’ kicks off a thoughtful, upbeat but melancholy selection of tunes in the manner of a Celtic tinged John Mayer.

It’s fairly mainstream, and in folk terms Brighton-born Jon Redfern is more Mayer than Renbourn in the John stakes and there’s a definite Pink Floyd edge in there, especially on ‘Somewhere’. ‘Lost’ is a little bit Tunng with its electro feel and syncopated rhythms, and the strings that usher in ‘All This Time’ are pure Nick Drake as is the cello on ‘Demons II’.

What brings May Be Some Time up a level from your average common or garden singer songwriter stuff are the arrangements with Patrick Durkan, and solid production from a solid producer, Real World’s Ben Findlay.

Redfern’s voice isn’t particularly strong and takes a backseat to the folk guitars, indie drums and fiddles, which in their fullness highlight the sparsity of the vocals.

May Be Some Time is released on Reveal Records.
