Both Carlos (along with last weeks’ special show with another Far Out legend Arthur Verocai) and Gilles have been playing tracks from this album already.

As you can imagine, in the mid-seventies these guys were at their peaks (what were they doing in Paris then?) and if you’re after Joyce’s vocal trade mark acrobatics, head for ‘Nacional Kid’ (that she’s re-recorded since) and the opener ‘Banana’. At the other extreme, ‘Chegada’ is such a gentle breeze of a tune that perfectly showcases the vibe with Joyce and Mastro’s voices and his acoustic guitar.

They co-wrote ‘Todos Os Santos’ which turned up on Marc Mac’s Brazilika compilation and Gilles says he’s a big fan of the percussion of Naná Vasconcelos who has a seminal reputation himself and must have appeared on hundreds of recordings ranging from the Lonesome Echo Production’s ‘Celebration Dance’ to the ‘lost’ acid folk of Luiz Eça Y La Familia Sagrada and La Nueva Onda De Brasil. In fact all three of them featured on that album so they have form in the area of lost-psychedelic-acid-folk-samba-bossa.

The highlight in that area is the central suite of ‘Memorias Do Porvir’, ‘Visoes Do Amanhecer’ (Visions of Dawn) and ‘Carnavalzinho’ (Little Carnival) but the whole album is a perfectly formed 35 minutes that’ll hours of joy on repeated listens.

Joyce is still sounding as good as ever though and was one of the stars of the 50 year celebtaion Bossa Brazil at the Barbican last year as well as recording with her daughter Clara Moreno Meu Samba Torto; the track ‘Clareana’ is named as a tribute to Joyce’s daughters Clara and Ana.

The Magica (with Tutty Moreno) was a great album, but I think this one is even better. Joe Davis (boss of Far Out) isn’t letting on how he got his hands on these tapes, but it’s the real thing of mid-seventies left bank and the cover (by Andy Votel) gets the look and feel of the music spot on.
