After being on her daughter’s album Meu Samba Torto and husband, Tutty Moreno’s Magica, this new recording sees Joyce and Tutty looking back to the golden age of the 60s samba jazz.

So what we get is a new take on the classic ‘Berimbau’ that was/is made for jazz scatting. Do you need another version? Well, it’s not a 100 mph version that you might expect as it’s really quite restrained with a gentle piano theme. Good call really, as it might have been out of place with the other tracks.

In fact, all the tracks feature Joyce scatting as she sambas and bossas through the 13 tracks ending with a new version of the scat-anthem ‘Magica’. If you know the original, this might take some time to un-wire your brain to. As it’s Far Out though, you know it’s excellent; it’s got something of the Herbert Big Band sound to it in a strange way. I’m warming to it.

‘Embalo’ and ‘Penalty’ are more obvious jazz-scatters but from the start, you know that Joyce’s voice will just brighten up your heart. And if you are one for all action high-speed jazz dance, there’s time to relax and chill. ‘Compositor’ is one of Joyce’s compositions and these type of self-congratulating back-slapping titles usually come with a health warning. Not here, but ‘Shangri-La’ should have one.

Even though we could do with a few more uptempo tunes, Joyce and Tutty aided by the usual high quality cast of musicians, Helio Alves (piano), Nailer Proveta (sax), Jorge Helder (bass), Lula Galvao (guitar) and more guests artists, they can’t be faulted.
