Karen P - ...Broad Casting

Karen P is …broadcasting to the world and you’d be daft not to tune in to her first compilation for Sonar Kollektiv.

SK186CD.jpg

You’ll recall from our interview with Karen (see HERE) that she started off with a wish list of 50 tracks before they got whittled down to 20 but, I suspect, always at the top of the list were those Moomins from Finland.

Effectively this is the first track on the album and if you know nothing about Tove Jansson’s popular Scandinavian children’s book/cartoon series, you’d be convinced this was the future of Finish impro jazz; ”Pikku Myyn Laulu (Lilla Mys Visa)’ is a summer hit from the leftfield.’

As I’ve said before, so many of Fly’s favourite artists have turned up here that there’s nothing not to admire. Aaron Jerome, Heritage Orchestra, Stereotyp’s ‘Take The Weight’ from Keepin Me, Tunng, Jamie Woon, Owusu & Hannibal ‘Blue Jay’ and Mocky. There’s hardly anyone missed out; apart from
Daedelus Love To Make Music To.

The ‘jingle’ production by Si Begg and Karen P (‘Broadcasting Across The Valley’, ‘Stars With Tails’, ‘Deep Water’ show great promise for future excursions in sound pictures along with the 12”.

And talking of old jazz, what can you tell us about the Rene Costy track. “A friend of mine sent me a mp3 of ‘Scrabble’ and even if you didn’t know it was the sample in the J Dilla track (F*** The Police)

If you like radio shows that touch multi-genres of electronic, folk, funk, soul, hip hop, jazz and the odd bit of experimental, this DJ is for you. The album is an eye opener to and she’s definitely one to watch.

Becky Jacobs wins a Sony Gold award for her literary podcast “The award is the biggest accolade you can get in radio,” Ms Jacobs, 32, tells People. “It’s huge for me and for the company I work for [Karen P Productions]. It means the radio industry will recognise us.” A radio producer for seven years (and daughter of this newspaper’s literary editor), Ms Jacobs also sings in the experimental folk-cum-electronica band Tunng. The band has been invited to play at next month’s Southbank Centre’s Meltdown Festival, alongside Massive Attack.
