Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Signed up to Nervous, after their excellent Danny Kravit 718 Sessions and Frankie Knuckles Motivation Too compilations, this is CD mix of King Britt’s own material. The Intricate Beauty starts with a dreamy Franco-file groove of ‘Love What You Have’ featuring the vocals of Rucyl Mills (and as an aside, I used to love a Ben Sherman shirt very similar to the one KB is wearing on the cover; button down collar of course). It’s a lite-house introduction and he sticks with the girl vocalists with Astrid Suryanto with ‘Now’ and Kim English on ‘Nightlife’. Now this is nightlife/dawn/Balearic/Miami party groovin’. And when I mentioned Lady Alma in this week’s Kay Suzuki review (see HERE), just to prove the point, check out super soulful Lady Alma on ‘Try Love’ (now that’s a King Britt mix if ever I’ve heard one). On the not so impressive side is the predicable repeatitive filler style of ‘Keep It Movin’ but as we’re about half way in/out we can forgive that as the mix into ‘Los’ (featuring J. Carlos Izaguirre) is King Britt quality of old. And long time fans will know that Britt has such an open mind to music recalling the early 12s on Ovum and Karma Giraffe to presenting Sister Gertrude Morgan to the last time we saw him with the deep jazz compilation King Britt Presents The Cosmic Lounge; anyway that’s true FLY Global Music. So now it’s getting percussively heavy with ‘Blackhand Side’ (with a bit of spacey synth) and a killer ‘Old School Dub’ version of ‘Get Up’ (featuring house legend Byron Stingly) that defies any non-dancing or moving reaction (even when it’s not the weekend). King Britt is workin’ up a sweat now as he comes to the climax as the last three tracks that are synth-house evolutions out of the Bustin’ Out period; especially the title track that’s more synth-pop; ‘The Intricate Beauty’ features the Bjork-esque vocals of Ayat. The CD is beautifully mixed throughout (as you expect these days) and showcases that King Britt is equally at home at the soul end of the house as he was tribal rainforest mega beats - plus it proves he’s still got it in the form of an The Intricate Beauty himself and where or whenever he’s near you, he’s a ‘must see’ for sure.
