Lack Of Afro - Press On

You’d never guess from the CD, but I suspect Lack Of Afro has more to do with hair than anything else. So what more can a boy do? Press on is the answer

Lack Of Afro

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Lack Of Afro (aka Adam Gibbons) has done a bit of a Color Climax so to speak with the debut album that’s coincidently coming out on the same day as Plug It In.

This album is more funk and soul orientated than his dirtybeatbreakinfunkandhiphop brother on Breakin’ Bread. Not only that, he’s managed to get his debut album out in just over a year since the 12” on Adrian Gibon’s Freestyle Records, ‘Wait A Minute’.

This has been followed by ‘Giorgio’s Brother’, ‘Roderigo’, ‘When The Sun Goes Down’ and ‘Spooky’ all coming out on vinyl.

‘When The Sun Goes Down’ you say, the Artic Monkeys track.Yep, that’s the one. This years’ Nostalgia 77 ‘Seven Nation Army’. Big funky guitar and jazzy flute, it’s one to turn the kids heads. Even convert them? If you listened to Aaron Ross on Peterson’s show the other week, GP’s gone the other way proclaiming Alex Turner and Siouxsie Sioux as soul saviours! Looks like Craig Charles’ producer has got the right idea (see links below).

Lack Of Afro has got all the right industry fans. Like Natural Self who remix ‘Roderigo’ (also notet Natural Self’s excellent The Love Theme EP is coming out on the same day on Breakin’ Bread) whilst Lack Of Afro is increasingly being involved remixing other artists (check out the Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators Remix album, along with that other Soulblender, Aaron Jerome, Mr. Scruff, Elizabeth Shepherd and many more) and he’s producing an album for US band, The Diplomats.

Even more impressive when you discover that Adam has played most of the instruments himself but then, as the head of Freestyle Records is none other than Mr. Soul-Jazz-Funk’n’Breaks Adrian Gibson, you know this is a quality release and not to be missed.

Funk On baby.

Hectic Mix nominations: ‘When The Sun Goes Down’, ‘Pure Filth’, ‘Roderigo’, ‘Wait A Minute’. ‘The Outsider’, ‘Touch My Soul’ (with sample of Steve Marriott), ‘Live At The Club’
