Laura Critchley - Sometimes I

The current golden girl of Terry Wogan’s BBC2 Breakfast Show, Laura Critchley’s on tour supporting X-Factor’s Ray Quinn and her debut album is coming out next month. Sometimes even I feel the hype

Laura Critchley

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Critchley was apparently ‘found’ on MySpace and within 12 months she will have recorded and released a debut album. Recording in LA with producer Steve Power (whose credits stretch back 20 years as the musical guidance behind Samantha Fox’s pop career) she even did 3 tracks in Robbie Williams’ home studio.

Her ‘Thank You’ sleeve notes are brilliant as she thanks “all my teachers at Wirral Grammar.. all my friends at MBNA Bank and City Group.. and my musical inspiration Karen Carpenter.” The tribute track to Karen, ‘Superstar’ was co-written with her main writing partner Dave Whitmey, who hails from the very un-LA town of Hitchen. It’s obviously in a very Carpenter’s style with big string arrangement that is bound to get her loads of media attention; bring on the disco mix.

And talking of guilty pleasures, the title track reminds me of ‘Wish I’ by Jem of a couple of years ago which I was rather keen on (well, more the remix with YT to be honest).

Now I was hoping album would be little more I Wish I Could Have Loved You More as Ms. Critchley comes from roughly the same neck of the woods as Ms. Payne (now there’s a link with Ronson and Williams) but it finds its comfort zone in MOR-pop that she celebrates in ‘Girl Next Door’.

Laura will be playing the Hammersmith Apollo in London on Wednesday, 24th October and the next single ‘What Do We Do?’ has already been added to Radio 2 playlist.
