Leggo Beast - Tales From The Crib

It’s been some time since we’ve heard from “scruffy haired” Leggo Beast (aka Murray Clark) but Big Chill have got him on his feet with this new album

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

From the title, you might guess that he’s been messing around in the home studio with his banks of analogue synths. That’s can’t be too far from the truth as each track bleeps and swoons — in a part orchestral, part dance floor way.

Like that last album, Thunk he’s helped out on guitar by and the vocals of Audrey Okyere-Fosu but it’s almost exclusively an instrumental album.

The killer track for me is the dirty jazz-funk electro boogie of ‘Shameless’ that definitely avoids the pigeon holes us journos love to put artists into. In the past he’s even been marked with producing the world’s first ‘jazz trance’ track!

None of the ten tracks quite get into that territory but there’s definitely some cinematic influences going on. In addition to producing Tales From The Crib, he’s been making films in Sierra Leone in the past two years which might have sometime to do with it; I suspect that’s where the live recordings for ‘Same, Same’ come from.

It’s hard to pick a ‘stand-out’ track as it’s very much an album experience but you can imagine having a great time to ‘Muddy Roots’ at a festival or a club. That said, the dubby jazz vibes of ‘Exponentially Yours’ and the deviant-rave-dub of ‘Are We There Yet?’ are something a bit special.

You’ll have a good idea what you’re in for if you was at his Electric Spanking night last Saturday at the Big Chill House and it’s the same place for the album launch on 15th November.

If you’re after something a little leftfield and original, Tales From The Crib has a lot to offer.

Hectic Mix nominations: ‘Exponentially Yours’, ‘Are We There Yet?’, ‘Shameless’, ‘Muddy Roots’, ‘Kits In Sync’, ‘Same Same’.
