Lighting Head - Area Boy / Preguntas Por Que

It’s great to have a new Lightning Head 7” and download single. And on Lion Head Recordings to boot!

Lightning Head

It’s been five years since the classic dub-based album, Studio Don took over the dancefloor. An album crammed with the trademark BiggaBush inventiveness; it took dancing the night away to the next level.

As you can guess from the titles, this new single is still reggae, ska ‘n’ ragga at the core but is ‘Preguntas Por Que’ the new reggaeton? The Spanish rap is provided by Blanquito Man (also see ‘Zuzuku’s People’ on Sound System) and it’s a special download introduction to the forthcoming album, 13 Faces of Lightning Head. The special guests on the album will include ex-Slits front person, Ari Up, Gilles Peterson’s bessy mate Earl Zinger and New York rapper Candice Cannabis.

The dub of ‘Preguntas Por Que’ is necessary for those special basement bins as it gooves in the trickiest of studio ways.

If you’ve ever gone to see BiggaBush (very recommended) you’ll instantly love the a-side of the vinyl, ‘Area Boy’. Like his mate, Paul Murphy, he’s not adverse to a bit of musical light-heartedness; (check the square bashing 1-2-3-4) together with some serious bass-line wobblin’.

Talkin’ of Murphy, Bigga has been asked to do a track for the forthcoming Afro Arthouse compilation of soundtracks (remember Glyn’s part in the release of Peak’s ‘Get Carter’?) and with that in mind, ‘Abyssinia Rising’ is some crazy low-down funk soundtrack with jazzy dub elements; “I am the ugly one” all, rise for King Stitt!

All brilliant stuff and it raises expectations for the new album. Especially when we’re told that he’s going for a proper live sound with a full Afro-style horn section and real rhythm tracks. For fans of anything from Liquid Liquid to Bob Marley, the Lightning Head has the ideas to make you’re feet dance and put a smile on your face; back live at the Big Chill House soon (see below).

Lightning Head — Studio Don “The phrase ‘Lightning Head’ was something I read in an interview with Lee Perry and for me it captures the idea of being inspired — like not just a little light bulb appearing over your head but a whole bolt of lightning from the heavens, illuminating everything.”, Glyn “Bigga” Bush [2002]
