Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. The eight-piece outfit from Angers, along with guest instrumentalists and singers including Bunny Barrington Dudley (of Mystic Revelation of Rastafari), Mina Wallet Oumar (singer in Sahara band Tinariwen) and Cesar Stroscio (Trio Esquina), released their tenth album in Bazar Savant. It’s a heady mix and one that shifts between dance, Arabesque rhythms, French chanson (Denis Pean’s poetic vocals offset by Nadia and Yamina El Mourids’ Arabesque backing voices) and jazz with elements of other genres thrown in like so many subtle spices in a good sauce. Formed in 1982 Bazar Savant doesn’t sound like a band’s tenth album and comes across as fresh and assured. ‘Tu Benes’ has a fantastic dance/flamenco/Arabesque feel as does the excellent ’ De Timbuktu a Essakane’. Pean’s vocals may not be for everyone but once the ear adjusts to them this is an album to be savoured for its rich blend of flavours, tempo shifts and atmospheres. Bazar Savant is released on Independent Records. Tour dates: Link: www.lojo.org |
