Lucky Elephant - Edgar |

Rob, fresh from his remix duties on the Amadou et Mariam ‘Masitéladi’ single (see review HERE), is with us again but this time as A&R for his Sunday Best label. Whilst Little Elephant might be a bit of a daft name, ‘Edgar’ sounds like a happy smiley world dub pop like a REM meets Friendly Fires. It’s a track that fully utilizes the skills of Emmanuel ‘Manu’ Labescat (vocals/melodica), Sam Johnson (guitar/Wurlitzer/piano), Paul Burnley (synth bass/harmonium) and Laurence Clack (drums). But for da Bank (who is keen on tracks with animal references) has the double bubble on the flip ‘Lucky Elephant’ as it’s starts on a keyboard line that is so Charlie Brown al la the original Peanuts (see HERE for your 101 on Vince Guaraldi and Peanuts) and it’s been mentioned more than once that it does sound like the theme of a forgotten children’s TV show. You can see why the canny da Bank would want them on his label as they would be brilliant at his jolly Bestival and Camp Bestival festivals (along with any of his World Music mates or shoegazing hereos). Lucky Elephant’s debut album Star Sign Trampoline is coming out on 20th July on, of course, Sunday Best Recordings and we’re looking forward to it immensely. Little Elephant might well be a daft name. It’s not THEIR name though, so… ha ha.
Love this single. Downloaded it on Tuesday and can’t stop listening. Pure joy. Particularly Lucky Elephant. I’m not entirely convinced by the vocals but think they’ll probably grow on me. Great!
