Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. The much overused ‘legend’ applies to the likes of musical maverick Luke Vibert so a new album in always eagerly anticipated and he’s excelled himself with this one; Luke, We Hear You Vibert’s last album release on Planet Mu was Chicago, Detroit, Redruth from a couple of years ago but he’s also known as much for his vast collection of aliaises (most notably as Wagon Christ on Rising High and Ninja Tune labels). He’s what Luke The Cheesy Beat Sample King Vibert was up to in 2004 (see interview HERE) but even the press that comes with We Hear You, makes the point that if Vibert came from L.A. rather than Cornwall, the general perception of him as an artist and his extension body of work would be much higher than it actually is. Well, tell Nick Luscombe that or Stonephace’s Krysztof Oktalski as they’ll tell you that Vibert sits right next to the best of your West Coast heroes (U.S. as well as Cornwall/Devon) and We Hear You is proof that his hearing is at its best in so many different ways. The title track shows off his ability to create something so hypnotically cool out of such simple lines and hooks that you’ll believe old skool hip-hop is British (even a bit of Lenny Henry doesn’t distract from this head nod all-winner). Clever and simple, this track defines the album that’s one of, if not the, best albums he’s done. He mixes up genres and EFX across the 14 tracks (on 3 vinyl release or 13 track CD) and within some tracks; hip-hop vs. Acid, experimental electronic vs. dubstep, electro vs. tech house. ‘Hot Slick’ tips its hat at Jean-Michel Jarre and ‘Square Footage’ has the DNA of Daft Punk on a train (and if you need reminding, check out Daft Punk’s Homework as it’s so seminal). With the Ashes series on this summer, I was hoping ‘Batting For England’ to be a big hit but it’s a rare weak moment so it’s not long before we’re back up to speed with ‘Pretty Old Acid Music’ (with traditional kids voice sample). So whilst you could spend hours analysing We Hear You, what Vibert has produced is an album that’s a great listen that will sound as good at home as it will in a club; as creative as a Madlib so get out and support it; we hear you Luke - devastating!
