Marc Rapson - Dark Vs. Light

If you’re looking forward to seeing Marc Rapson at Scope this Friday, don’t forget to take a few bob with you just in case there’s a few copies left of his fantastic debut EP for sale: Dark Vs. Light.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Probably the first time that you heard the name Marc Rapson was when the likes of BBC Radio 1 DJs Gilles Peterson and Rob da Bank played his cheeky edit of Marvin Gaye’s classic ‘Heard It Through The Grapevine’. But then, it wouldn’t have been the first time you’d heard him as he played keyboards in Ben Westbeech’s band (he of Welcome To The Best Years Of Your Life album) which we covered in the review of Emanative’s Spacebeats EP this time last year.

Since then Marc has been a bit quiet so the demand for Dark Vs. Light when it eventually was released was very high to say the least. And even though Gilles talked all over ‘Dark vs Light’ when he played the title track, the first pressing of this EP was sold out almost immediately so get it whenever and wherever you can.
Not only do you get the duplicitous excellent title track that’ll give FlyLo a run for his money, there’s also ‘Love Is All’ that features Liz Elensky, who was recently spotted with Emanative and Mathew Halsall at Dingwalls for the Peterson/Forge gig; all of whom featured in some capacity on Emanative’s Time album early this year) and the jazzy funk beat dub called ‘From Shadows’ (and that’s just on side one!)

So if the A-side is ‘Dark’, do we see the ‘Light’ on the B-side? Well, I’d say ‘The Kalimba’ is up there with all you beat troupers as it’s got a touch of minimal Donso about it whilst ‘In Spirit’ is a little more laid back in the Japanese gardens.

Dark Vs. Light sets an incredibly high marker for the album which must inevitably be forthcoming and this guy is yet another on the Futuristica Music conveyer belt of brilliance - don’t forget, Bournemouth (not space) is the place to be this Friday.

10th December 2010 SCOPE with Marc Rapson, Bronson, Simon S, Martin Gordon (Brownswood) play hip hop, jazz and soul. 8.30pm-2am Sixty Million Postcards 19-21 Exeter Road, Bournemouth www.sixtymillionpostcards.com
