Matthias Vogt Trio - Changing Colours

From what I can make out, this is the debut album by the Matthias Vogt Trio and there’s definitely one track causing repercussions.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

The most dance/commercial track on the album is ‘Expecting Repercussions’ on a jazz-piano-broken tip with excellent vocals by Dania König. Also look out for the 12” with remixes Trüby Trio and Volker Meitz.

But with my new found enthusiasm for trios [well, the Elizabeth Shepherd Trio in particular] this album is a chance to catch up on Mr. Vogt, (he of the superb [re:jazz] version of ‘Torch Of Freedom’ and Rockers Hi-Fi’s ‘Push Push’) as he leads on piano/keyboards with Andreas Manns (Bass) and Volker Schmidt (Drums).

The CD opens with a jazz-reggae track, ‘The Look Into Your Eyes’ (with the vocals by Roger Cicero). I think it falls a little short of the commercialism of radio plays on a Smooth FM (dreams of a ‘new’ Police will have to hold on). Both ‘Expecting Repercussions’ and ‘The Look Into Your Eyes’ (different version on the 12”) are unrepresentative of the CD as a whole as the rest of the album, save for Vogt on vocals on the last track, is all instrumental tracks.

Much in the Jez Nelson/Radio 3 style, there’s bits of fusion, prog rock, classical thrown in (probably best exhibited on ‘The Watermethod Man’ or ‘Circle Of Friends’) but there’s no denying all the musicians are on top form.

So, not really 100% for me (try the 12” as that has the original version of ‘Expecting Repercussions’ on it, as played by Mr Peterson) but it’s of note that this is INFRACom!’s 128th release out of their Frankfurt base. Particularly good to see this CD keeps to their mantra of supporting artists that cross “all borders musically, geographically and racially”. Very FLY.
