Megson - Smoke of Home

Anyone who has driven past Middlesborough will know the Smoke of Home comes up in great plumes from the factories just off the A19. And it’s this area (the ‘proper North’) that provides the inspiration for Megon’s second album.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

There’s something everso folk college graduate about Megson, something a bit Seth Lakeman, which is unsurprising given a long-standing association with the fiddle singer. Stu Hanna and Debbie Palmer’s voices are fresh and bright with self-conciously northern accents, folk crossing into pop. But it is infectious.

I saw Megson play at Putney’s Half Moon and have been waiting for the second album ever since. ‘Follow It On’ stood out in the gig and the duo have managed to capture it well on the album as they do with the lifting pop tune ‘Fell To The Breeze’.

The more folky numbers, ‘Just As The Tide’ and especially ‘Durham Gaol’ are the pick of the bunch for me, and if you can catch them at any of their live dates over the summer, including Sidmouth Folk Week and Marlborough Folk Festival no doubt this album will be one of your next purchases.

Smoke of Home is released on EDJ Records on 2 July.
