Memory Tapes - Bicycle

Yep, it’s that time of the year when summery summer sonics often have a Tour de France reference. And this is the best of this years’ bunch from the Memory Tapes is ‘Bicycle’.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Disco Balearica and nu-Balearics are popular themes at this time of year and Memory Tapes has hit the psych, electronica indie end of things on this new 12”. Whilst Zane Lowe hasn’t put this one down for ‘Hottest Record in the World’ just yet (and he does pick some good uns), don’t be surprised to see Memory Tapes on his blog.

And taking of things like blogs ‘n’ myspace, the dreamy chill out of Memory Cassette uploaded some material that was closer to the electro of his other project, Weird Tapes and that started a buzz and reached the ears of Faris Badwan (of The Horrors). Due to the sound being neither personally of Memory Tapes or Weird Tapes, the hybrid Memory Tapes was born as a third alto ego!

The12” will be released next month as a Limited Edition and, along with ‘Plain Material’, the style has been dubbed ‘Dreamwave’ (by Gorilla vs. Bear) but that’s not the full picture. ‘Plain Material’ is like a poppy Daedelus at the teen disco whilst the original mix of ‘Bicycle’ is in the wheels of a David Byrne in the peloton on the road to nowhere.

With this odd mix, it’s no surprise that Memory Tapes has had the call from a some of the big boys asking if he’ll bless them with a remix (so watch out for those). And whilst on the remix subject, back to The Horrors for a cosmic dub! The Horrors on the Crimea X tip with some “pyschedelic cosmic love from California” a la Carlos NiƱo? Hard to believe but The Horrors have re-invented themselves from the Mercury nominated NME darlings (best known for their trendy band t-shirt) of a relative recent pasat to dance club/tent DJ set heroes; a bit like New Order’s transformation. And the Cosmic dub mix of ‘Bicycle’ is the best of this set.

If you can imagine Giorgio Moroder, Tosca and Iain Archer in a beautiful dream, you’ll be somewhere near Memory Tapes; recommend you get onto this one quick and prove how cool you are.
