MOD X - Political Sun

MOD X’s choice of some of the most interesting collaborators on his 12” releases continues to astound.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Jon Kennedy (Tru Thoughts/Grand Central) follows Kid Loco (who remixed ‘Picture Man’) and Paul Murphy’s classic, ‘The Quest’.

Those that know, say it’s: “Dangerous, heavy and dark moods for what will become a leading record!!” It certainly is leading, he’s not gone totally electro broken funk jazz 6DC crew version but it’s not far off (in translation from the MOD X fan club lingo, this means it’s bloody brilliant). It’s the bass that gets ya in a funky broken-jazz way.

The ‘Alt. Take’, is more ‘Sun’ than political as it starts in the chill of the beaches of the Med. As such, it’s gentler on the ear, which is soothed by the strings. Not half as jazzy as the original but it retains it’s broken vibe. I feel a call to Enrique is on the cards for A Slice Of Paradise.

Jon Kennedy is one of Manchester’s best known via his solo work on Grand Central and collaborations with Kate Rodgers in a funky breaks type mode. You may recall, ‘The Way I Feel’ with vocals by Karen Wilson. He also remixed the South Coast’s favorite funkers, The Baker Brothers’ ‘Givson’ on the ‘Remixes’ 12”. So what’s he done here? He’s taken ‘Political Sun’ into the broken-techo-house arena with drums. He’s brought the bass back and put some horn into it.

It’s going to be an interesting next few weeks as both MOD X (Paris) and Paul Murphy (London) are putting the finishing touches to their respective debut album releases, a tale of two albums to look forward to. Check out all the myspace links, as there are some great teasers to preview.
