Morcheeba - Blood Like Lemonade

Here’s a crowd pleaser from back in the day as Skye Edwards rejoins Paul and Ross Godfrey in the classic line up of downtempo beat favourites Morcheeba with a new album, Blood Like Lemonade.

If you’re still recovering from your Big Chill experience like me, here’s another band that I missed this year (as they clashed with Taylor McFerrin, Andreya Triana and Stac on ‘Super’ Sunday) but could there be a more appropriately named band than “morcheeba”? It means “the way of marijuana”?

Skye’s vocals were an integral part of the Morcheeba sound since their formation in 1995 and as she left in 2002 on the Charango album (’São Paulo’,’Slow Down’ and the rest), Blood Like Lemonade is now their 7th album and and finds a return to the “old” Morcheeba sound.

Skye certainly isn’t a ”Recipe For Disaster’ as followers of the saying “never go back” would imagine. Their ‘trip hop’ sound is actually more of a mix of rock, pop, soul, hip-hop, blues and folk in a downtempo daze.

The album takes a few listens and the first few tracks take a while to get into a stride. By the time you get to the last track ‘Beat Of The Drum’, you’ll get its dreamy climax beat. And other highlights are the pop-ish ‘Recipe For Disaster’, the folky ‘I Am The Spring’, the blues-harp-slide of ‘Mandala’ and one for the b-boy turntablists, ‘Cut To The Chase’.

The single ‘Even Though’ is too sweet for me, but the title track is a bit of a leftfield grower and in the whole, this album is a welcome return,

After the summer festival gigs, there’s a European tour in October (see their myspace site below for full details) with a prestigious show at Camden’s Roundhouse.
