Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. That’s the feeling I know so well. Two tracks from Hotflush, the home of Scuba and Mount Kimbie…Dominic Maker and Kai Campos taken from the new LP Crooks & Lovers on 19th July”, Gilles Peterson talking on his show this week but it’s been a whole year since Peterson interviewed them first on his show when they released thier first EP. So if your a fan of Mount Kimbie’s work on Foals’ ‘Spanish Sahara’ or The XX’s ‘Basic Space’ (now doubt getting them on the list of acts appearing at London Fields and on The xx tour - see below), this album might be a little tricky to get to grips with. It’s a bit back to the old broken sound, glitchy house, hip hop beats and the general evolution of dubstep. And then theirs shades of Industrial and African roots all at the same time; perhaps this why Mount Kimbie are more the Peckham sound than Croydon? ‘Before I Move Off’ is like ‘Get Carter’ meets Steve Riech but you can see that it’s a far cry from bass wobblers. That said, ‘Blind Night Errand’ gets close whilst it’s a shame their version of Arthur Russell lasts less than a minute and a half (‘Adriatic’). It’s not all instrumental tracks, ‘Mayor’ goes for the old helium trick, ‘Between Time’ is the distorted spoken word dub and ‘Carbonated’ has some female vocal to a curious backing of broken Chinese water torture and sleigh bells; now you see how emotional these guys ambient soundscapes are? If you like your indie rock, the guitars on ‘Field’ are a bit of a surprise but at the moment my favourites are the longer dubby-ish tracks like ‘Ruby’ and ‘Ode To Bear’. The label Hotflush has featured old and new dubsteppers like Shackleton, Loefah, Benga, Martyn as well as the nu-bred like Jazzsteppa and Joy Orbison (the latter’s single, ‘Hyph Mngo’ being one of last years’ biggest tunes) so they know how to catch a wave. Even though you’ll be unsure whether to call Mount Kimbie/Crooks & Lovers dubstep, techno, minimal, downtempo, experimental, ambient or even something else, you will grow to love it - definitely for fans of James Blake and the like. On a personal note, I’m still not sure about the cover photo; nobody is perfect I suppose. Forthcoming dates: Reviewed: Mount Kimbie - Crooks & Lovers (Hotflush Recordings) Cat.
