New Flesh - Universally Dirty

You’d think, from the title at least, this would be Big Dada going further down the line of BMore gutter music.

New Flesh - Universally Dirty

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

But New Flesh are not the UK’s Spank Rock even though both groups are trios. MCs Juice Aleem and Toastie Tailer plus producer Part 2 have been off the scene for some time as Part 2 (best known for his work with Roots Manuva) has been concentrating on his graf art. That’s not to say he doesn’t know what’s going on as you can hear the influences as they blend hip-hop, dancehall, grime and reggae.

It certainly starts off well with the dancehall hip-hop of ‘Backyard’ and the Roots favourite ‘Wherever We Go’ with big strings. Both tracks are going to appear on a 12” with extra Part2 remix/instrumentals.

Along with the deep ‘n’ grimey ‘Howz Date’ it’s clear the album is going to be a succession of hip-hop blends done in a UK style like the Toastie solo track ‘Home Movie’ (you can guess the subject matter).

Also watch out for the Hectic favourite Stereotyp meets Al’Haca stylee ‘Don’t Look Now’ and ‘Arms House’.

I suspect the next single will be ‘Trouble’ as it’s the most pop-reggaeish.’Who’s The Daddy’ is a bit clichéd and the skit ‘Black Marble’ is truly odd but that apart this is an album that improves on every listen.

If you need a history lesson, DJ Andy Smith’s Trojan Document is excellent but for what’s happening today, try Universally Dirty. It’s dirty all right.

Hectic Mix nomination: ‘Wherever We Go’/’Backyard’ (Single out 24th July 2006, Cat. No. BDCD095) or ‘Arms House’/’Don’t Look Now’.
