Mungo's Hi-Fi - Sound System Champions

Mungo’s Hi-Fi is a dub reggae, dancehall and dubstep soundsystem in the original roots tradition based in Scotland so don’t be surprised that the 12-track album features some of the finest old and new MC talent.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Tom Tattersall, Douglas Paine and Craig Macleod started out in 2001 and have covered all elements of reggae over the years, even getting a track on Dubstep Allstars: Vol.06 last year.

Sound System Champions concentrates on old-skool roots, ska, rocksteady and dancehall with some MC’s that you know and love. Tippa Irie has recently been working with Richie Phoe and appeared on The Bug’s killer album London Zoo last year but this guy has been doing this for over 20 years and he certainly knows his stuff, ‘Ruff Mi Tuff’ have mercy.

You’ll also recognise the name of Ranking Joe as he’s been at it even longer than Tippa, about 10 years longer and his credits include appearances on Easy Star All-Stars’ Dub Side Of The Moon and a track on The Biggest Dancehall Anthems 1979-82: The Birth Of Dancehall on Greensleeves Records to name just two (of the coolest). ‘How You Bad So?’, very bad I’d say, yes yes.

And then there’s the herbalist Top Cat who has worked with Boozoo Bajou in the past and you might remember Ras Charmer from ‘Brave And Bold’ by Minus 8 that came out on Compost Records.

Other top tunes ‘Rooster’ and ‘Under Arrest’ and ‘Don’t Let Them Break Your Heart’ is real authentic reggae al a Rodigan.

Not forgetting the ladies that open the CD with ‘Divorce A L’Italiene’ (that has Marina P blasts out some soulful ska) and closes the album a dubby-rocksteady ‘Did You Really Know’ with Soom T on the mic.

This is great new-skool old-skool reggae and a solid release over all the 12 tracks; respect Rockers Revolt.
