Obba Supa - TO:AM - FREE:AM

Obba Supa make tunes for the hip hop community who know who The Last Poets and Mike Ladd are rather than those concerned with putting big rims on their cars. I’m also guessing this album was conceived mainly when the world was sleeping in a smoky studio using old Elvin Jones records as skinning up trays.

It took UK hip hop a long time to shake off the shackles of the US and now the UK has more than it’s fair share of vocal talent documenting UK life at various tempos across different, rapidly mutating, genres and Teknical Developments is a promising addition to the deeper, leftfield side riding the excellent atmospheric, grainy, jazz flavoured beats produced by Hey!zeus.

With 18 tracks on the album songs, interludes and beats come and go pretty rapidly but the late night smoky basement jazz club vibes and quick fire observational lyrics remain constant.

Personal faves are the haunting beats and gritty lyrics of ‘Fly On Turntable’, the operatic quirky introduction ‘Escapade Escaping’ and the bass booming, beatless, wise words of ‘Cosmic Blast’.

Not really big on long narratives Teknical’s lyrics are pretty disjointed, almost like someone uttering random profound lysergic induced thoughts before they forget them but these brief snippets of consciousness and observations have a certain quirky charm. What really holds the album together though is the great smoky, hazy, atmospheric jazz beats of Hey!zeus - the real star of the album.

If you know who Saul Williams and Sun Ra are and you listen to both then this album could well be up your street.
