Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. I bumped into Dom Servini at the Peterson/Forge Sunday Afternoon at Dingwalls album launch gig last week and he explained that they want to keep Part Time Heroes and PTH Project separate. To be honest, I didn’t understand the explanation of the difference between the two as we both agreed ‘Realize’ was just as good as the Wah Wah 45s work they’ve done, especially as the ‘Pretend Paradise’ 12” sold out in just 2 weeks! What we do know is that Realise EP is spelt ‘Realise’ and that its neo-soulful nu-jazz with some great vocals by “vocal talents of new comers Jono McCleery & Lucy Kitchen, plus the superb ‘BBC Jazz Vocalist Of The Year’ Liane Carroll”. The title track, is definitely in a Big Chill classic mode with great vocals from Jono. ‘Brandon Heights’ is mode of a dreamy mid-tempo flute and keyboard nu-jazz instrumental that is just my type of thing. Fans of Ms Carroll (who also featured on ‘Pretend Paradise’) will know she is the first ever artist to win two BBC Jazz Awards in the same year nominated. ‘Shadowlands’ starts out a little murky modal before settling into a jazz broken dance shuffler. It’s that good, it could easily have been played at Dingwalls. One for the diary, she’s making a special appearance at ‘Ronnie Remembered’ (Poole 28th October with ex-Ronnie Scott drummer Martin Drew, The New Jazz Couriers and John Critchinson). While Carroll is jazz through and through, Kitchen has some of the nu-folk thing in her voice and ‘All This Time’ is a killer of a track with swirling strings, broken horn stabs and jazz drum kit. Fans of Futuristica Music will love this as it fits in with the manifesto of future soul / funk / hip hop and jazz. How sick was I to have missed PTH’s DJ gig at Outpost a couple of weeks ago (with the brilliant Black Grass on DJ duties (check review of his mix CD, Deadstock 2006 plus residents Silver Man, Ben Smith and Ed Bagnall). To make up for it, there’s a Part Time Heroes Podcast and you can hear ‘Realise’ on the MySpace sites (see links below)>.
